The wrong choice?

I was all about choosing the most ethical choice when it came to buying a turkey. Then I forgot what it was. I know, roll your eyes! I went to WF and purchased a turkey breast that says it’s vegetarian fed and has no antibiotics. But it’s grain-fed. Isn’t it supposed to be grass-fed? Or is that just for beef? Perhaps I should have researched this better, but it was getting late and I wanted to buy it before WF closed and didn’t want to go tomorrow. But for next year, what should I be looking for when it comes to poultry? I really don’t eat much of it but want to be smarter in my choices in general.

This is the first year that I’m cooking for Thanksgiving! Jason and I are having our first family dinner along with our friend Danny, who is also staying in town. I haven’t bought anything besides the turkey yet, but I am thinking this should be the menu:

turkey
green beans (recipe suggestions anyone)
Oh She Glows sweet potato casserole except that I’m going to unveganize it and add marshmallows
Danny is bringing stuffing
rolls
dessert

I think it is fine for three people. I just need a good green bean recipe. I don’t want it in casserole form though. Jason is definitely going to be in charge of the turkey because I don’t know the first thing about cooking it. This whole meal should be interesting, that’s for sure.

Went to the gym tonight. Did my non-running workout which is 20 minutes of cardio + NFLFW. I did the stepmill and then a workout. I am still technically on Stage 1, but I am so bored of it that I skipped to Stage 2. This is what I did:

1. squat-press with a barbell, 20 lbs, 2 sets of 10. The book says to use a squat rack. What the hell is a squat rack?
2. i have the book in the car and can’t remember what the second exercise is called. You basically do bent over rows while standing on one leg with the other out so your body looks like a T if that makes any sense. 20 lbs, 2 sets of 10
3. static lunges with back leg elevated, 20 lbs, 2 sets of 10 each leg
4. push ups on a smith bar, approx 45 degree angle, 2 sets of 10
5. plank, 60 seconds, 2 sets
6. woodchop, 30 lbs, 2 sets of 10

Hope everyone is having a nice, short week. We are having a potluck tomorrow at work and hopefully will get to leave after lunch. Woo hoo!

  1. I always get confused about making ethical choices. Of course, I know the basics and look for organic, free range, grass-fed (grain-fed?) on the labels of my meat but that’s about where my knowledge runs out. Part of me just wants to make the jump and just go vegetarian. I mean, I like meat but I can definitely live without it…

What dessert are you making? Good luck on your first Thanksgiving!

  2. Sounds like a great Thanksgiving Day menu you have planned. Good luck with everything – I’m sure it’ll all be wonderful!! :)

  3. Your menu sounds great! I usually look at the back of the French’s Onions (the breaded kind) container and there is a green bean recipe there. Sorry I couldn’t be more help, but I’m not a green bean fan. :)

  4. I thought it was supposed to be grass-fed too but now I am confused! Pretty sad since I just watched Food Inc. one night ago haha. Have a great Thanksgiving. Your menu sounds great!

  5. I would think that you got the right one b/c it said that it’s vegetarian fed and has no antibiotics, but then again, they also advertise sugary breakfast cereals as high in fiber and whole grain, so I don’t know! So confusing!

  6. Oh my…I have no idea. I guess that’s why no one asks me to buy meat. :-) I would assume if it’s from WF, it’s “okay”? Is that wrong to assume? They charge so much $$$, I would think their stuff is “safe.”

Angela’s casserole looks SO good. Shocking, but I’ve never had SP casserole, since I just realized I only liked SP a year ago!

  7. Sometimes I make green beans with garlic & lemon juice and kind of saute them until they’re just cooked…Boiled or steamed and sprinkled with almond slivers is always nice & easy!

I have no idea about the turkey…maybe google it?

Cookies or brownies would be an easy dessert…

  8. Great workout, I get frustrated when I can’t remember a workout sometimes. Have a great Thanks Giving!

  9. As far as the turkey goes I guess free range is probably important but that might be hard to find at W.F.’s It sounds like you got a pretty good one though despite feeling like you made the wrong choice. It’s a step or two up from Butterball, that’s for sure! The only green bean recipe I know is the one with Campbell’s soup and Fried Onions but that’s a casserole. You could always do them with a little honey mustard sauce glaze and some toasted almonds?

  10. Great workout! Sounds like a fun day tomorrow with a yummy menu. I know nothing about turkeys – grass fed or anything. We’re doing lasagna for lunch and enchiladas for dinner – score!
