I have a degree in Studio Art. In order to get that degree, I took several photography classes and really enjoyed them. After I graduated, I didn’t have access to a darkroom (this was 2000, so pre-digital camera days) so I put my hobby on hold for several years. Fast forward to Christmas 2009, when I got a DSLR for a present.

It had been many years since I’d picked up a manual camera so I had to refresh my memory about things like ISO, f-stops and aperture. I bought a Canon Rebel for Dummies book (don’t laugh!) but I wanted to learn more. So I signed up for a Digital 101 class at a local photography store. That was Spring of last year. I really enjoyed the class but life got busy for a while.
Taking those dog pictures at work really renewed my interest again and I signed up for the intermediate class – Digital 102. I had my first class last week. Every week, we have homework that’s due the following week. Our homework for tomorrow was to take pictures illustrating 4 words out of a list of words. I chose the words:
Together

Wild

Color

Alone

I didn’t color correct them because I didn’t know if we were supposed to. I’m excited to pursue my hobby more. Sometimes, I feel like I focus so much on food and running and stuff and it’s nice to have another hobby that has nothing to do with those things. Makes me feel like a more well-rounded person.
What are your hobbies that aren’t food/workout related?

I love photography, I wish I knew more about the technical side. I really like your color and alone pics, you have a great eye!
Really creative and nicely done pictures. That’s a great skill to have.
I really need to cultivate other hobbies outside of running and dabbling in the kitchen. I want to learn how to sew better and knit. That’s something pratical, yet non-physical, I can to do unwind.
a non-food, non-workout hobby!? blasphemy!!
just kidding. love reading, discovering new music, hosting things, dreaming about ways to decorate my home, exploring zen philosophy/self-improvement, and um, shopping.
Oh Lord, where do I begin? Mountain biking, surfing, archery, whitewater kayaking, spearfishing, beer tasting, SUPing, superbike racing, snowboarding/skiing, freediving, sailing, traveling…
I really like the examples you picked. Great job!
What’s SUPing?
Stand Up Paddleboarding. Imagine standing on a LARGE surfboard and propelling yourself forward with a long paddle for very long distances. One of my favorite things to do in the ocean.
Wow–terrific photos! Love them. My hobbies outside of food and fitness are writing and reading. Wish I had time to do more of both.
Where are you taking classes in the Atlanta area? I’ve always wanted to get some training with photography and wish I would have taken a class at Ga State during my undergraduate.
I’ve taken up knitting since moving to Alaska. I’m really thinking about getting a sewing machine though and try to make my own clothes. My mom and some close friends can read patterns and such so hopefully I’ll just go for it.
Showcase Photography on Cheshire Bridge Rd.
I took photography in college too (darkroom days), but for some reason, DSLRs realy intimidate me!
Great pics!
I bought a DSLR around Christmas time and have been meaning to take a photography class because I KNOW I am not using my camera to it’s full potential (just haven’t had time). Maybe I should invest in that dummies book, did you find it helpful?
Sort of. It’s definitely worth a shot.
I love photography but totally suck at it!
Wow, great pictures Lee!! Do you like your Canon Rebel?
Right now my hobbies are running, my blog and decorating the house. I’ve taken an intro class for point and shoot cameras and I’d like to learn more about photography. I’ll also be adding wake-boarding to my list of hobbies as soon as I can start heading up to the lake on the weekends.
I am very impressed with your photography. My “other” hobby is knitting and sewing. I haven’t done either in a loooooong time. You kinda inspired me now to get back to it. Great post.
Your photos look great, Lee. I love “Color” and “Alone” in particular! Good for you for taking classes. I’m taking French classes right now and am loving it. It feels really good to get out there and challenge yourself.
Those pictures are great Lee! I would love to get a dslr. I wish I had more hobbies that are not food/workout related. I like to read and write (not blog write) and am happiest when I’m doing those a lot.
Oh my gosh, I got my degree in studio art, too
Not that it’s gotten me anywhere! I do miss art and how much I used to do when I was in school. I graduated ten years ago, and I have creative times and not so creative times. I think I’m about to enter into a creative time again.
We have a lot in common!
So cool! I want one of those cameras SO bad! I love the wild picture
Traveling is my other favorite hobby!
I took a black & white photography class in high school and loved it.
My hobbies are photography, running, yoga, and playing with my dog
