Overdid It

I feel much better today. Not 100%, but so much better. I went to work and aside from a few sneezes and coughs, I was fine. So fine, in fact, that I decided that I needed to go to the gym afterward. I’ve read all that stuff about how it’s fine to work out if you feel bad above the neck (i.e. a cold) but honestly, I felt like crap all weekend. It was hard enough to go to take Murphy for a walk around the block. The gym was definitely not in the cards. As much as I know that it’s best to listen to my body when it asks for rest, and mine really was, I slept for like 12 hours both nights, I still get a little bit antsy when I don’t work out for days at a time.

So today, I met Jason at the gym after work. I thought that it’d be better to do weights instead of cardio, so I did the bikini plan from the Women’s Health Big Book of Exercises again. I really like this workout. It really feels like I’m getting stronger. It doesn’t seem like a long workout when you look at it on paper, but it took me an hour to complete.

I had planned to go to the grocery store and make a vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie for dinner because Jason saw something about Shepherd’s Pie on tv last night and wanted to try it. I think that I pushed myself a little too hard though because by the time I got home from Kroger, I was exhausted and Shepherd’s Pie was not going to happen.

Hello Kashi pizza (with extra added veggies). Kashi Pizza, you are good but three servings, you’ve got to be kidding me? If I wasn’t splitting you with Jason, I could definitely eat you all.

with a side of Baked Doritos if I’m being honest. Maybe I’ll feel good enough to cook tomorrow.

Do you work out when you’re sick?

  1. No, I absolutely do not work out when I’m sick. I’m a big baby. I love that you added extra veggies to your pre-made pizza! :-)

  2. Aw, sorry you feel so lousy. At least you’re on the upswing now.

I stopped buying Kashi pizzas for that reason….too small to split with the hubby, too big to eat by myself (even though I could totally house one and still have room for dessert).

  3. Glad youre starting to feel better! I always seem to overdo it too quickly! Rest up

  4. Rest up – I’m sure you’ll be back to 100% soon. I love the convenience of frozen pizzas but I neverrrr buy them because I could eat the whole silly thing. I need to make some pizza dough here, or at least buy some tortillas. Somehow, getting pizza delivered is not that fun if you live alone!

It really depends on the situation if I work out while sick or not. Depends on what kind of sickness and how long it’s been since I’ve worked out, too. I will definitely do things like walking on the treadmill at any point in an illness, haha.

  5. You’ll be back to 100% in a couple of day but it is important to rest. Gym can wait. The funny thing about recovering is that we take the bodys message of being slightly better and rush to our normal lifestyle. I hate being sick and losing my normal routine, so I know what you mean. Hope you feel better soon.

  6. No way, I totally just lay all over the couch covered in cats watching bad movies when I’m sick. Hope you feel better soon.

  7. I like to go to the gym when I’m not deathly ill – I find it helps to sweat out the “ick.” Glad you’re on the upswing!!

  8. I never workout when I’m sick. Maybe I’m lazy, but I just don’t see how exercise could possibly be a good plan when my body tells me to sleep instead. Once I feel a little better, I work my way into it…lighter workouts the first few days back. When I was seeing a trainer, he’d have me work on my balance for my first session back.

  9. I work out sometimes when I’m sick but usually take it easy. I’m actually very rarely sick (knocks on wood). I can kind of feel sickness coming on so I back off and rest up then. I think it’s great that you didn’t push yourself too hard and took it easy this weekend. Rules were made to be broken. ;) You know what’s best for you.

And I totally agree with you about Kashi pizzas. I prefer to eat pizza without serving sizes and calorie counts on them. I enjoy them more that way. I eat healthy most of the time and “ignorance is bliss” has it’s place. Hope you feel 100% better soon!

  10. I think guidelines are helpful for some people. But I think you are much more in touch with your body than others and that means you know what’s best for it (if you are truly honest with yourself and avoiding any guilt issues which are my trap). i’ve def been set back by pushing too hard but also found a light walk can help me feel human when i’m ill.

  11. Yum, baked doritos!! As for working out when I am sick…I will if I can breathe ok and feel up to it. but if I am weak and seriously stuffy, I won’t.

  12. Yea Kashi frozen pizzas are crazy with “3 servings”. We always split one between us too and its not quite enough. We even split Red Baron pizzas between the 2 of us!

  13. Sorry you don’t feel 100%. That’s the worst! I like the added veggies, it’s a great way to amp up a meal!

  14. I don’t work out when I’m sick, but I do go out to get fresh air and a walk. I think air is really important when you’re ill, so I hope you get a breather out! And feel better, Lee!

  15. I usually don’t unless I’m training for something. I take any excuse to not workout :)
    Get better girl!

  16. I hope you feel better!! I most definitely do NOT work out when I’m sick. No way! I kind of enjoy all of the lounging on the couch, if I’m being honest.

  17. I sometimes work out if I’m sick, but it depends on what the problem is. I usually try to take one full rest day regardless, just to give my body a chance to rest.
And I know! Those Kashi pizzas are SMALL!! Three servings is a joke – it’s barely two!

  18. Depends- usually something light just to keep moving. I’ve run two races while being sick and I was absolutely miserable! I had a fever both times and it made it even worse. Never running with a fever again!

  19. Aw, I am glad you are feeling better. I have worked out before while sick- it was neck up so I figured I was fine – but it made me feel worse and I had to stop after 1.5 miles on the treadmill. Now I just take it easy, though it’s hard when you feel antsy!

  20. I’ve never had the Kashi pizza! Worth the price?
