Winter Workout Woes

Something that I struggle with year after year is maintaining my level of fitness throughout the winter. It’s partially the hustle and bustle of the holidays, partially the colder weather and partially because I’m not usually training for anything. But this year I have a plan.

Jolene and I (and anyone else who wants to participate) have been emailing each other about a 6 month running challenge. She posted her ideas on her blog and I thought that they all sounded like something I wanted to work on for myself, so I decided to join her.

Her ideas were:

1. One long run per week
2. One maintenance run per week
3. One interval run (either speed or hill intervals)

I’ve been doing okay so far. I guess I’m getting the running in when I think about it. On Sunday, I did about five miles with Joan. Mondays are usually my rest day, but I did this little mini-workout instead of completely taking the day off.

I thought I found the workout on Pinterest, but now I can’t find it. It was:

10 jumping jacks
10 pushups
10 squats
10 sit ups

then 9 of each, then 8, etc.

Tuesday was supposed to be my maintenance run day. I was going to do about 4 miles. I got about a mile into it and it started sprinkling. Then a few minutes later, it turned into a straight out downpour, so I turned around and went home. It was raining so hard that Jason actually got in his car to come look for me. (I gave him my ipod and continued running home without it once he found me.) I wasn’t wearing my garmin, but I’ll count this as a speed workout because I was definitely running much faster than normal.

Yesterday was more cross-training. Lately, I’ve been into doing body weight workouts that I’ve been finding online rather than weights at the gym. No reason for it really, just wanted to switch things up. I decided to do Naomi’s 480 rep workout. This was much harder than I thought it was going to be. Those burpies nearly killed me! I didn’t time myself, but I think it took around 40 minutes.

So, that’s what I’ve been up to exercise-wise. Do you struggle with workouts in the winter?

  1. I am focusing on switching it up right now (outside the classes I normally teach). Wednesday, I took Body Combat, which I haven’t taken in ages and today I did a new treadmill workout with a lot more variation than what I usually do. Good stuff. BAH to the rain! If its warm, I like running in the rain but not when its chilly

  2. Oh yeah, I definitely just stop working out in the worst parts of both winter and summer. I think I’m going to have to break down and get a gym membership as soon as it gets so cold out that I start chickening out of my runs.

  3. I love the whole idea of the 60 day “challenge” for running – I’ll definitely be participating too! It IS much harder to keep up with running endurance in the winter when it’s god-awful outside and the treadmill just gets so so so SO old. But I think if we band together, we can SO DO THIS!

I’m also still seriously contemplating that Cleveland half! Nothing like a race in the spring to keep you chugging along all winter, right??

  4. I’ve been hitting the gym more and I began using my kickboxing membership. I also like to do bike-elliptical-treadmill intervals during the winter. I don’t do cardio well inside, but the intervals keep me entertained.

So sweet of Jason to come look for you!

  5. I definitely struggle with exercise during the winter. I usually try to workout in the mornings but it’s just so much harder to get up when it’s still pitch black outside. The mini workout sounds good, I will try that sometime. Good luck with the running challenge!

  6. I struggle year-round, but I’ve been having a super hard time lately. It’s time for me to buckle down!

  7. I haven’t done Naomi’s workout but that one definitely looks KILLER! And that running layout has been my way of doing thigns all this time, so I guess I’m in too. ;)

  8. I am SO glad you like this idea and want to keep at it with me this winter. I struggle with this so much, I just want to keep a good cadence going all winter! We can do this!!! :) I actually have some DVDs I am not using, maybe I should mail them to you :-) Core Fusion, some others too!

  9. I didn’t struggle with winter workouts when I was living in Arizona as much because it wasn’t quite as dark and not nearly as cold in the evenings. Now that I’m back in the midwest I totally struggle with it. Oh how I hate winter.

  10. That workout looks insane!! I workout fine in the winter because I need those endorphins to make up for the cold.

I think it’s super sweet that Jason came to look for you! And you’re totally badass for running in the rain!!

  11. I definitely need a direction to go with running after my race. The weather here just goes from hot to subfreezing (feeling) within a couple of weeks and all I want to do is hibernate. I did pretty good last year with weights/cross training because I go to a morning class and the group really motivated me to keep chugging along. But running…blech. I struggle. And then before I know it, I’m trying to race a killer trail race in GA in May. I need a better plan to keep training in the winter.

  12. Winter workouts suck! I usually run inside ;)

  13. I usually do well with winter workouts since I’m not traveling as much as I am in summer months. I guess having a gym also helps. If I didn’t have access to that, then I’d be in trouble.

  14. YES! I struggle with workouts in the winter. Today I wouldn’t even get out of bed because it was soooo cold!
