First Day

I survived my first day at work. It went really well. I was basically in training all day and will be all week which I think is great. I’ve had a lot of jobs that just sort of throw you into the water and expect you to swim, which I always do, but it’s nice to actually get formal training.

The day was sort of a whirlwind of new information and new faces. Everyone seems really nice though and I really think that I am going to like working here. Plus, we can wear jeans. Bonus.

I declared today a rest day and Jason and I went out to dinner. As we’ve been doing recently to save money, we consulted Scoutmob to see if there were any interesting restaurant deals and came up with Istanblue Turkish restaurant. It was kind of on the expensive side but when you factored in the Scoutmob discount and the fact that we weren’t drinking, it really wasn’t bad at all. I underestimated the amount of snacks that I should bring to work, so I was starving by the time we got to the restaurant and practically inhaled this large dish of hummus with lots of bread.

And I wonder why I have problems losing weight.

For my meal, I got the tilapia. I was a little disappointed when it came out and it was covered with a cream sauce. Nowhere does this description mention a cream sauce, does it?

Tilapia baked in homemade sauce of mushrooms, zucchini, bell peppers, garlic, onion, parsley and dill

Maybe I’m too anal, but if there’s a sauce, I want to know about it. The description made it seem like the vegetables were the sauce.

Aside from that, and the fact that the restaurant was oddly empty (when we got there around 7:15, we were the only ones there), it was a nice Monday night date night. I’m exhausted. I think it might take a while to get back into this working thing.

  1. Glad to hear the first day went well! Jeans are a HUGE bonus.

I used that ScoutMob too. Got ome kind of eggplant vegetarian dish. It was ok, but the lights were too dim. It freaks me out to not see my food. Also, there was a belly dancer. Maybe a Friday night thing?

  2. Glad the first day went well. I hate when I end up with a surprise cream sauce too. The hummus looks fabulous though

  3. Sounds like you had a solid first day at the new job. Always great to take the time to get the training you need.

I’m with you on the sauce. I HATE over-saucing as well, and would have had the same reaction you did if my meal came with a surprise saucing. Still looks tasty though!

  4. I always wonder about restaurants that are empty. It seems like a bad sign.

Congrats on your new job, by the way!

  5. Yay!! So glad that the new job looks like it’s going to be great! :) I’m sure you feel much better know that you know what you’ll be doing!
As for the dinner- I would DEFINITELY like to know if something is coated in sauce. I always ask, because I’ve had a similar thing happen. Or I ask how it’s cooked. I just want to know what I’m getting. I also always ask for a sauce to be on the side (because I’m a control freak :) ).
A few months ago I ordered a “broiled rockfish filet” from a restaurant and it came out BREADED! Not the same.

  6. UGH re the sauce! Guess ‘homemade’ meant cream sauce? that sucks, but glad you had a fun date night out! And congrats on day one, it sounds great so far, and training, while boring, at least allows you to get up to speed!

  7. Yay for a good first day! But isn’t getting back into work mode the worst? Every September I go through it, doesn’t get an easier, ha.

  8. So glad your first day went well, and jeans are definitely a plus!

  9. Congrats on surviving your first day – I bet it’s wierd going back to 9 to 5!

I hate when menu descriptions aren’t very accurate. I guess that’s the bright side of me asking so many questions when I go to restaurants now, I have a better idea of what is actually going to be on my plate. :)

  10. i’d be PISSED….it isn’t a health thing, i just usually don’t like cream sauces.

can you send me the leftover job search vibes?? TWENTY-TWO months…i know it is b/c i am tough to figure out with the JD. i have a really cool interview thurs and i WANT IT

  11. I agree that sauce should be stated in the description. I hate horseradish and mustard flavors and get so mad when a nasty sauce featuring those things shows up without a warning.
Glad you had a good first day!

  12. I’m so glad that your first day went well, Lee! :) I’d be disappointed about the sauce, too!

  13. Yay – I’m glad it went well. :) Can I come work there too? I’m all about jeans at the office!

  14. I’ve been meaning to comment forever, but I keep reading on my phone (and commenting is a b!tch) – congrats on the new job! :) Glad to hear yesterday went so well!

  15. I agree, I like to know about sauces!!

Glad your first day went well!!

  16. Congrats on your 1st day of work! I just love ScoutMob, I used it the other day at Little Azaio – it was delicious and cheap!

  17. Yay for being back to work!! Proud of you & excited for you! :)

  18. Can I just say jealous – of the jeans and the food. We have a strict no jeans policy and my husband won’t go near hummus. Arg.

So glad to read that your first day went well. Yay!

  19. Congrats on the first day of work! I’m a huge fan of training to help you understand your new job.

I’d be mad about the tilapia too. I think descriptions should be clear.

  20. YAY for two reasons: surviving your first day at work AND having a fun little Monday night date night (despite the cream sauce annoyance). :)

  21. Congrats on day one down! (And day 2 down by this point!) That hummus looks amazing. Jeans are such a huge plus at work.

  22. Woohoo! Glad you enjoyed your first day, Lee :) Very exciting.

  23. So glad your first day went well!

I would have been really confused about the sauce- the entree sounded like fish and veggies. Annoying!

  24. Congratulations on starting a new adventure! I’m so happy for you!
