Unplanned Rest Day

I had it on my schedule that I was going to run five miles at the gym after work. As usual, the end of the workday rolled around and I had little to no motivation to go the gym. Normally, I just force myself to drive there and by the time I start working out, I feel better, but tonight I decided to take a rest day.

I’m not sure when the last day I took off was – sometime last week, I guess. I think it might have been Thursday. Working out six days in a row doesn’t work for me. I get cranky and well, just need my rest. Plus, I had two freelance things to write that are due tomorrow and I knew that if I ran the five miles, I’d get home late, write crappy because I was tired and then have to go to bed and not enjoy my night at all.

Unplanned rest days for the win! I’ll do the five miles tomorrow. I haven’t run since Monday, when I did three miles at lunch, so at least my legs will be well rested.

I kind of milked the “I have wooooooork to do.” thing for all it was worth and Jason made dinner. I wasn’t kidding when I said that I made sandwiches as an alternative to tofu last night. You knew that tofu was going to make an appearance and here it is!

Jason made a sauce out of soy sauce, oyster sauce, garlic and sesame oil. He didn’t write down the proportions though. In the sauce went a bowl of Trader Joe’s Asian stir fry vegetables and the aforementioned tofu. I made some soba noodles to help absorb the sauce.

I’m hoping that I’ll be feeling the running thing tomorrow. I have to admit: I’m ready for this race, which is March 18th, to be over. I think I might retire from half-marathoning at least for a while. I know I always feel like that and then sign up for another, but I”m really not feeling it anymore. Maybe it’s because I did most of my training alone, but whatever the reason is, I feel like I need a long break.

  1. I miss tofu. I’ve been having to cut it out with the hypothyroid stuff since soy apparently messes with me. Crazy thing is that I have actually noticed a huge difference since not eating it….but I sure do drool when I see it used in yummy ways like you do!

  2. I go through phases of not wanting to run too… I’m sure it will come back as spring approaches. Can’t wait to cheer you guys on March 18th!!!

  3. hmm. it sounds like you might need a break from running – just to avoid losing your love for running entirely, you know? Just having this forced week away from running has me missing it and can’t-waiting to run again. I always find that a few days (or weeks or even months) away from a certain type of workout always makes me feel fresh and ready to get back to it after taking time to try a different set of workouts for awhile. Maybe you should consider trying something new for a month or so after the race?

  4. Hey, I think ‘retiring’ from half marathoning for awhile sounds great…sometimes it feels like burn-out, doesn’t it? Do it if it makes you happy, stop if it doesn’t. I am enjoying my run challenge and focusing on it, but loosely, too, ya know? Dinner looks great, nice job Jason ;-)

  5. Ugh after work runs are the worst! I don’t know how people do it regularly! I don’t blame you for taking an extra day.

  6. At least Jason cooked for you! :)

  7. I think we need to plan some blogger running get-togethers to help everyone stay motivated and have fun running together. Something to add to my to-do list. :)

  8. I always feel that way the last few weeks of training too. It will be over before you know it! And unplanned rest day was probably the best choice you could have made :)

  9. You’ll get back in the swing of things in no time!! I’m sure of it. March 18th will be here before you know it! I can’t wait to see how awesome everyone does!

  10. I saw your “sick of running” post on FB…sounds like a rest day was definitely in order :-)

  11. Heck yeah unplanned rest day! I’m sure it was what you needed. And like you said- you’ll make up those miles anyway. I usually take one rest day a week, but should probably start throwing an “unplanned” one in there every so often. It would definitely be food for my obsessive personality. :)

  12. Now that I can run again I thought I’d be itching to get back to training for a half…however, I am super happy training for a 10k. Maybe bc it isn’t as much of a time commitment?

btw, we are in Summerville! We had two days to find a house to rent so there weren’t many options. I like it so far though!

  13. So I can’t remember my last rest day. I think it was a month or two ago. LOL.

  14. I think rest days are amazing :) I know I do my best running when I don’t run on back to back days.

Maybe you could explore other types of cardio?
