Saturday Fun

Jason’s parents came to visit yesterday.  They live in South Carolina, about two hours away.  We hung out at home for a little bit, before heading out to one of my favorite stores, Big Peach Running Company. Everyone but me was in the market for new shoes and they found them.

Although, I didn’t get any shoes, I did get a new shirt.  Thanks Debbie and Tim!

After shoe shopping, we went to Old Navy and then to our final dinner destination, 5 Seasons Brewery.  They had a watermelon wheat beer that I just had to try.  It was really good.  Definitely not too sweet, just a hint of watermelon flavor.  I don’t really drink a lot of beer, I prefer wine, but I do like a nice wheat beer on occasion.  For my meal, I had the portobello mushroom sandwich and sweet potato fries.  The highlight of the meal, however, was this great cayenne, cinnamon cream that came as a dipping sauce for my fries.  It tasted like spicy cinammony whipped cream (which I guess it was) and I could have eaten a bowl of it for my entree.

My mother-in-law’s birthday was earlier in the week and our original plan was to go to a cupcake place by our house.  However, shopping took longer than we’d anticipated and we weren’t done with dinner until 8:45 and the cupcake place (25 minutes away) closed at 9.  Fortunately, with a little iphone help, we realized that another place that sold desserts, West Egg Cafe, was like two minutes down the road and open until 10.  We got a fun mix of different things to try – caramel cake, cookie dough brownie, lemon almond macaron, homemade pop-tart and a peach turnover.  I tried them all and I think my favorite was either the cookie dough brownie or the peach turnover.

Now we’re off to test out our new running shoes and shirt at the gym because my shirt speaks the truth, the humidity is insane right now in Atlanta.

  1. Oooh watermelon beer sounds good. I’m also not a huge beer fan but that sounds like something I might enjoy, too.

  2. We just went to Big Peach out here in Suwanee to get Tony some running shoes! It was such a great experience and he is seriously loving running these days. Enjoy your run and hopefully stay as cool as possible!

  3. I tried one watermelon beer once and wasn’t a fan, but all of the blueberry beers we can get around here are pretty decent.

  4. I’m not a beer girl but the funky PA laws had us relying on the beer store one day or a long haul to the one wine store open on Sun..before my new find, a bit of info for out-of-staters

    - no alcohol in supermarket, but a few fudge this and put in a little cafe…you can buy six-packs, singles of fancy-beers (no wine or spirits) but need to check-out at the separate register (can ring up storemade foods like wraps or sushi but no anything else);
    - state-owned/run Beer Distributors sell cases and kegs (hours vary, some due sunday but not our);
    - state-owned/run Wine and Spirits sell those things (hours differ, some due sunday) ;
    - Most bars, plus some pubs and pizza places) also sell six-packs of beer to carry out

    Okay, so that’s why I was stuck in the beer store when our town wine store was closed and it woud have tken a bit of time to go to another. I used to drink ciders but increasingly they felt to sweet. We stumbled upon a case of Michelob Ultra Light Cider and decided to give it a go. REALLY good. Tart but not too hard to handle, much less sweet than Woodhuck or Cider Jack. Nice when I want a change from my red ines or just need a colder choice.

    Worked well with my new trick…put room temp cans or bottles in a container. Add ice. Add water. Add salt (they said 2c, dont know what we poured). They said cans would be could by 5min. We waited a little longer thinking the bottles might be tougher, but tried somewhere around 9m. Icy-cold, colder-than-the-fridge cold

    okay. i shall stop stealing the comments now

    • Oddly enough, I just bought that Michelob Cider yesterday. I thought it was okay. I don’t know why I bought it; I don’t really like cider!

      You will be happy to know, if you don’t already, that we can now buy alcohol on Sundays here in GA!

  5. Oooh…a peach turnover sounds divine!

  6. Mmmm…dessert box. I want that lemon almond macaron.

    Watermelon beer sounds so good- I can’t wait to have beer again! For now, wine will do. :) . I love when parents/in laws come to town- in addition to visiting I usually end up with some new workout gear too. :) . Where in sc do they live?

    • Why can’t you have beer now? His parents live in Seneca, which is right outside of Clemson.

      • Very cool! I’m trying to get my bearings and figure out the layout of the state, ha.

        After drinking beer here and there I’ve learned that beer while nursing (for me) = painful clogs. Beer can increase production which is good for some but bad for me I guess! I cannot wait for a blue moon!

  8. Sounds like a great weekend! I’m loving any peach dessert right now. Can’t get enough!

  9. Great shirt! I’ve been wanting one because they really do speak the truth about running here. It wasn’t even that hot out this morning but I was totally drenched from the humidity.

  10. I have to say, that’s what I miss LEAST about Atlanta. Come take a break and visit us in Colorado. :)

  11. I love 5 seasons!! Their portobello sandwich is absolutely delicious!
