Sunday at Stone Mountain

I let Murphy out back this morning around 10 and realized that it actually wasn’t stifling hot like it’s been for the past couple of months.  There was no humidity in the air which made me want to do something outside.  We decided to go to Stone Mountain, which is…you guessed it.. a large mountain made of stone.  It’s actually sort of weird looking, made of granite just sticking out of the ground, a mile high.

There are plenty of things to do in Stone Mountain Park, but we wanted to go to the top of the mountain.  There are two ways to get to the top.  You can take a gondola…

or walk the mile uphill.  We knew from the beginning that we wanted to walk.  It started out as a slow, rocky climb.

But closer to the top, it started to get steeper.

Three quarters of the way there!

There was a little bit more of a steep climb before we got to the top.

We made it!

Though it was only a mile each way, it still felt like decent exercise and it was fun to do something different than just spending time in the gym.  I thought that our climb back down would take a lot less time, but it took almost as long as climbing up, due to the step drops at the top.

I must have told Jason that I like spending time outside at least five times when we were there.  But it’s true.  Whenever we do outdoorsy stuff like this, I really enjoy myself.

  1. I love Stone Mountain. We need to go again with the kids. We usually try to at some point over the summer and each season, but it’s been so hot this summer. This weekend was perfect for it, though! Glad you had fun. And yea – those climbs are steep and tough towards the end!

  2. I have never hiked up Stone Mountain. Really should do that sometime.

Sounds like fun! I love spending time outdoors- looking forward to cooler temps so we can do so more comfortably :)

  4. You guys are too cute! Glad you had a fun hike! :)

  5. So much fun! I always think the same thing when we do something outdoorsy that isn’t for workout purposes (like a run or something) — so a hike, a long walk, stuff like that — so fun, and we don’t do that stuff nearly enough!

  6. I wish I did more stuff like that, but it’s always so humid here and then in the Fall it’s football season and that takes over my life. Sounds like a great way to spend a Sunday!

  7. I hiked Stone Mountain in April — a lot steeper than I thought it was, but that view is definitely worth it! Looks like y’all made it on a great day too!

  8. You look great!! And I love doing that too, taking a walk, or a hike or something simple. the time together is so great, and for me, so unlike when I am running with M, when we are mostly silent, next to each other. We can talk and really enjoy it!

  9. Fun! How long did it take to do the hike up and down?

    • It was about 25-30 minutes each way. We stopped to take pictures and stuff though. I was actually surprised that it took roughly the same amount of time to go up as it did to come down.

  10. Fun! I haven’t hiked Stone Mountain since probably middle school. Great thing to do when it was slightly cooler than normal.

  11. Looks awesome! I definitely like to spend as much time as possible outdoors on the weekends- as long as it’s not 100 degrees.

  12. Climbing Stone Mountain is always harder than I remember – but what a great view! :)

  13. I remember going to Stone Mountain as a kid when I lived in Atlanta. I was terrified of falling off the edge. Glad you had such a fun hike :)

  14. Tony and I have only done that once and never taken the kids. I want to go with them so badly though! We opted to go on the lake Sunday morning. It was so incredible out there! I’m glad you two were able to get out together!
