A Blah Post

I was having one of those afternoons where I couldn’t quite tell if I’m coming down with a cold, suffering from allergies or was just tired and achy from a workout that I did on Tuesday. Probably all three. Nevertheless, I went to the gym anyway. My legs were killing me from doing a leg workout for the first time in over a month (very different from the muscles that I use running, apparently!) so I just did arms and no cardio.

After my race, I was sort of at a loss in terms of what to do exercise-wise, so I started up the LiveFit Trainer again, starting from the beginning of Phase 2. I’m not so great at fitting in both the lifting and the cardio on the same days, but I like having a set lifting plan as opposed to just wandering around the gym aimlessly lifting things. I need to get back into running before I lose my endurance though; I’ve only run once (and only 2 miles) since the race two weeks ago. Umm, oops?

Today’s workout was Day 39 – arms, abs and cardio. The cardio didn’t happen. Blame Day 38. My legs are burning. Actually, if you factor in the 20 minute walk that Murphy and I went on, I did do some cardio. And I felt better too. Maybe I’m allergic to sitting in an office all day?

Probably more like I’m allergic to pretty plants like the ones that have been blooming in my backyard.

I wish I could end this post by saying that I had some wonderful meal tonight but the truth of the matter is that it’s 8pm and I haven’t even thought about what to make. My freezer is full of Trader Joe’s stuff, looks like that’s what I’ll be having.

DC Weekend

My trip to DC was mostly filled with family and food. Interestingly, I have very few pictures of either. We got into town late on Friday night and pretty much just went to sleep. On Saturday morning, I walked to Bethesda Bagels and picked up a dozen bagels. I wish I lived in an area where I could just walk over to a bagel shop. Sigh.

Bethesda Bagels and Flowers

The bagels were not for me, Jason and my mother alone, although I probably could eat four bagels, but for my Aunt, Uncle and cousins who came over for brunch. It was fun to see them, especially since I hadn’t even met my cousin’s 6 month old daughter before.

After brunch, we took naps (do you expect anything different?) and then Jason and I headed over to my father’s house for dinner with my dad, stepmother and brother who lives in the area too. Everyone had steak salad but my stepmother made some grilled shrimp for me since I don’t eat steak. After dinner, my brother took Jason and me out to a couple bars in Bethesda and we pretended that we were 24 years old again. Well, my brother didn’t have to pretend; he really is 24.

The next day, we had lunch with one of my oldest and best friends, Margaret and her 3 year old daughter Iris. Margaret’s husband is in the army and they are stationed in the middle of nowhere but she happened to be visiting when we were. Nice coincidence. We went to a really mediocre (at best) restaurant in Bethesda, so I won’t even bother to talk about it.

Originally, we were going to walk around my mother’s neighborhood and look at the Cherry Blossoms that grow there but the rainy weather had pretty much washed them all away. Some still hung on though.

Cherry Blossoms

We also, at some point, went to a Farmer’s Market. It was really too early in the year for anything good, but it was fun to look around.

Green Onions

Watermelon Radishes

I also might have dragged Jason to see The Hunger Games.

My parents live right outside of DC (they are divorced but live like 5 minutes from one another) in Maryland and a lot of the time, we don’t make it into the actual city. This time, we did, briefly to meet my mom at Busboys and Poets for lunch before we had to get back on a plane and head back to Atlanta.

Jason and I have been in DC this past weekend. I didn’t bring my laptop and I don’t want to upload my photos to my mom’s computer, so I’m going to post about our trip when we get back to Atlanta.

I’d also like to say that I’m highly annoyed because I did not get into the Peachtree Road Race for the second year in a row. There is a lottery for the 60,000 spaces and a few thousand people don’t get in. I realize that someone is going to have to be part of those people, but two years in a row? That’s just messed up, I think. Plus, I submitted a qualifying time. I think if you submit a qualifying time, you should have a higher chance of getting in. I am a runner. I can run 6.2 miles. It’s not fair that for two years in a row, I haven’t been allowed to and others that are unable to do so and won’t train are! (I bought a number from someone last year so I actually did run it, but it’s the point of it all.)

Do any Atlanta friends have as bad of luck as I do?

Dining Al Fresco

I didn’t mean to disappear like that. I got a new computer and migrating my applications and files from old to new took a while (especially since I did it incorrectly like three times).

Despite having to go to work on Monday, it really felt like a relaxing day for me. My race was over, I had no workouts looming on the horizon and it was warm out. So, despite the absurd amount of pollen in the air, Jason and I decided to dine al fresco.

I stopped at the grocery store on my way home from work and picked up some hot dogs – veggie dogs for me and turkey dogs for Jason – and some whole-wheat buns. Also beer.

Shiner Bock Hefeweizen

While Jason grilled, I got everything ready. Murphy decided he wanted to sit at the table with us.

But then he got upset when we told him that he couldn’t have any food.

Murphy Barking

While the hot dogs were good, the pollen was out of control and made for a rather uncomfortable evening.

Still, there’s something carefree about grilling outside, even if it’s on a Monday and the pollen count is 9,000

The Publix Georgia Half-Marathon (My 10th)

In addition to driving the expo together, Tina and I decided to drive to the race together too. In previous years, I’ve taken MARTA (the subway) but since we had brunch plans after the race, it would have taken too long to take MARTA back to my car and then drive back downtown to the restaurant. We left my house at 5:30 in order to make sure we had enough time to get downtown, park and meet Lindsay at 6:30.

#Lindsay, Tina and Me#

We managed to meet up with Lindsay right away and the three of us stood around for a minute, taking in the crowds before we split up to go into our respective corrals (they were in Corral B, I was in Corral I.) Oddly enough since there were 18,000 people running, I ran into a co-worker as soon as I stepped into my corral. We chatted for a little bit and then the race began.

#GA marathon start#

I didn’t know what this race was going to be like for me. I didn’t train as well as I could have. I did all my long runs, but I kind of slacked off when it came to the shorter runs. My training plan had me running four times a week and I often skipped one of the days. There’s no rhyme or reason to why I did that; I just did.

I was kind of hoping for a miracle, but here’s a spoiler: that didn’t happen. The first couple of miles were fine. Mile 3 was difficult but I remembered it being difficult in previous years and I kept reminding myself of that. From Miles 4-8, I felt pretty good, except that I was getting some stomach cramps. The weather was unseasonably warm and I was worried about getting dehydrated so I kept gulping down Gatorade which was not a wise move.

In previous years, Mile 9 had the runners going through Piedmont Park but this year, we ran down Monroe and up 10th street instead which was a bummer. One because it’s fun to run in the park and two because 10th street is like all uphill. I was not feeling this race at all at this point. However, I knew that Laura was going to be spectating and I was looking forward to seeing her. If you’re not a runner, you might not know this, but seeing a familiar face on the sideline of a race course when you’re feeling tired, sick of running and questioning your sanity, really helps a ton. Thanks so much Laura! She stopped and took a picture of me. I think I look happy because I was glad that I could stop running for a second.

#Mile 9.5 of the race#

The last three miles of this race are pretty cruel. The race is hilly as a whole, but the last three, especially Miles 10 and 11 are pretty bad. My legs just felt like they couldn’t do it, so I did what I didn’t want to do; I took some walk breaks. Before I got to Mile 10ish, I was on target for running a 2:15 race, but my walking obviously slowed me down a lot. I didn’t care though. I just could not push through. By the last mile, I knew that a 2:20 race wasn’t feasible either. Even so, I decided to push myself and run the last mile with no walk breaks. My legs felt like they were moving in slow motion, but I didn’t walk.

I crossed the finish line with a chip time of 2:27 something. Definitely nowhere near a PR (PR is 2:14) but I’ve done worse. After the race, I found my friends and Lindsay was nice enough to let Tina and I shower in her hotel room. After we were de-stinkified, we met up at Stone Soup, a restaurant in Grant Park. And by we, I mean me, Tina, Laura, Lindsay, Lindsay’s husband Travis, Lindsay and Travis’ daughter Clara, Heather and Heather’s husband Kirk (who ran the race too).

#alttext#

This restaurant was a great choice. There were several vegans/vegetarians in the group and there were tons of choices on the menu for everyone. Plus, we got to sit outside in a cute little patio and they were able to accommodate our group of 7 (well, 8 including Clara) with no problem.

#tofu scramble at stone soup#

I had the tofu scramble, which was good but needed some salt. It was fun to sit around and chat with everyone although by the end of the meal, I was fading fast and really was craving my bed!

And like that, Sunday night came to an end and so did half-marathon training.

Expo Time

Tina and I decided to meet (conveniently at Whole Foods) so we could drive downtown to the race expo together. The GPS took us in such a way that we went right through downtown where a St. Patrick’s Day parade/festival was going on. It literally took us 45+ minutes to go five miles. After what seemed like an eternity, we parked at the Georgia World Congress Center.

#Downtown Atlanta#

Since I’ve run this race every year since it started in 2007, I got to stand in a special Streaker line to pic up my race bib.

#streaker line#

In addition to getting a red bib instead of a green one (I think they were green), I also got a cool hat.

#streaker hat#

Tina and I wandered around the expo for a bit, grabbing random free samples.

#larabar samples#

#soymilk and bread#

There was even meat, although we passed on that. The people working for Publix seemed to get a kick out of me taking a picture of it though.

#meat#

In a corner, we found the Chobani Cho-mobile, which was probably the most popular thing at the expo. Tina had been talking to Lindsay from Chobani, so we wanted to find her. There she is!

#Tina and Lindsay from Chobani#

Lindsay hooked us up with yogurt. Seriously, look at this!

#Chobani#

I think there were ten in there! And also, a side effect of working in the promotional products industry is that you note what brand of bag they came in. Gemline if you were wondering. Although I’m sure you were not.

We stayed at the expo for about an hour before heading back to our cars. We ended up running into Lindsay (blogging Lindsay not Chobani Lindsay) as we were walking out the door. Yes, I realize this is not a picture of Lindsay, but you can pretend and I have one of her from the next day anyway.

#lee and tina#

Since we parked at Whole Foods, I decided that’s where I’d get my dinner from. Most people eat pasta the day before a race, I eat kale. Although I stuck a bit of pasta in there for good measure.

#Whole Foods dinner#

The rest of the night was spent preparing for my early 4:55 am wake-up call.

Friday Night plus a PSA

Interesting responses to my last post. I think that if I legitimately had to choose, I’d miss exercising. My problem stems in the fact that while I really enjoying racing, I don’t really enjoy training. Anyway, two days of nothing until the race so yay for that. I embrace it.

Here’s a little PSA for you: Butter toffee coffee is disgusting. I know, that’s a shocker, right? I bought this big variety pack of K-cups on Amazon and decided to try the butter toffee flavor. I’ll preface by saying that I like flavored coffee.

#kcups#

However, this tasted like butter. Bleh, butter flavored coffee. And yes, I realize that I’m killing the earth, one K-cup at a time. I do other things to make up for it. Reusable grocery bags cancel out K-cups, right? Doesn’t my K-cup organization method rock, by the way?

Okay, public service announcement over.

Last night, Jason and I went to this relatively new Mexican restaurant called Red Pepper Taqueria. (Thought: why aren’t they using the URL redpeppertaqueria.com? It redirects to eatatredpepper.com so they own it.) We started out with the salsa trio.

#salsa trio#

The one on the left was sort of thick and weird, but the other two were good. The problem, and my problem with all Mexican restaurants, is that it came with a crapload of chips and they all seemed to find their way into my mouth.

With our chips, we had some fun drinks. I had a white sangria and Jason had a margarita. They were mostly fun because of the glasses that they were served in. Drinking from mason glasses makes everything taste better.

#white sangria and margarita#

For my entree, I had the de la costa salad minus the bacon chips and with tuna.

#de la costa salad#

I did not eat that fried thing on the left. 12 million chips were enough fried foods for the night, I thought. This came with a really good dressing. Some sort of cilantro ranch, but it didn’t taste like cilantro. It tasted more like onion dip.

Jason had two tacos. I’m not sure what kind, but he wanted me to take a picture of them too.

#dos tacos#

And that, my friends, was my Friday night.

If You Had to Choose

My race is on Sunday which means one thing: it’s taper week. Okay really it means a lot of things, but the taper week is the most important one because I love it. I read about how a lot of people hate tapering, how they feel lazy, how they feel like they aren’t going to be prepared. Not me. 30 minutes of exercise three times a week this week is all I have to do? I’ll take it!

I feel like it’s a faux pas (at least in the healthy living blog world, which is where my head is half the time), to say this, but I’m going to come out and admit it anyway: I work out so I can maintain a relatively normal weight. Sure, there are plenty of times that I like it and I obviously do like running races, but you’ll probably never hear me utter the words, “It’s so nice out; I just can’t wait to go running.” You might hear me say, “It’s so nice out; I just can’t wait to sit outside on a patio somewhere.” or even more likely, “It’s so nice out, but I’m going to take a nap anyway.”

I like how I feel after I work out and I get sort of anxious when I don’t work out, but I feel like that’s related to being worried about weight gain more than anything. It’s a healthy habit (the working out) that I’ve created for myself, but it’s a struggle because inside I’m inherently lazy. That’s why I have no sympathy for people who say that they don’t like working out and just can’t do it. Guess what? Half the time, I don’t like it either, but I know it’s good for me and I make myself do it.

After my [tapering] 20 minute run, I went home, walked Murphy and made myself a random dinner of Brussels Sprouts, mushrooms and Trader Joe’s Tofu Edamame Nuggets.

#dinner#

The tofu edamame nuggets were good. They totally tasted like chicken nuggets. Of course, I haven’t had real chicken nuggets in at least ten years, so what do I know.

While I have to force myself to work out sometimes, I don’t have to force myself to eat healthy. Sure, there are times when I eat poorly, but generally, I like eating healthy food. I think it tastes good. This meal tasted good to me. Yes, a pizza would have tasted good too, but I don’t crave junk food much at all. It hurts my stomach when I eat it and I feel sluggish and gross.

So, if I was given the choice of not exercising but eating healthy or exercising a lot but eating unhealthy, I think I’d pick the first one. I mean, I like the way I feel from doing both and don’t intend to ever make myself choose, but if I had to pick, that’s what I would pick.

How about you? If you had to pick, would you rather eat healthy (say 90% of the time) and not exercise or eat junk food 90% of the time but exercise a lot (and pretend that what you ate did not have any impact on your level of physical fitness)?

What’s Cooking

I often have a backlog of pictures of food. I tend to take pictures of pretty much everything that I make, especially if it’s from a recipe, but if it doesn’t go with what I’m blogging about, it doesn’t get posted. But I wanted to show some recent eats that didn’t make it to the blog. Until now.

Spinach Stuffed Flounder with Feta (not stuffed and with catfish that I accidentally bought when I meant to buy tilapia):

Cozy Millet Bowl with Mushroom Gravy and Kale:

Skillet Cajun Flounder with Tomatoes (again with catfish because that’s what happens when you go to Costco) with Garlic Spinach:

And that’s what I’ve been cooking. Cause I know you were wondering. :)

Day of Pampering

I decided to treat myself to an afternoon of relaxation yesterday. Jason bought me a gift card for a one hour massage for Valentine’s Day. The thing was burning a whole in my pocket. I could not wait to use it. I called up Natural Body yesterday morning and made an appointment for that afternoon.

#Natural Body Spa Gift Card#

#Natural Body Spa#

I told my massage therapist that I had two problem areas. One was this sore spot in my left shoulder/upper back that I cannot get rid of. I’m assuming it’s from sitting at a desk with bad posture. (I’m left handed and yes, I use the mouse with my left hand. Some lefties don’t.) He said that’s a hard area to massage because you have to get under the shoulder blade. Makes sense to me because it seems like as much as I try to get Jason to rub my back there, the sore spot never goes away. I wanted him to focus on my hips/IT Band too. Really, I sort of wanted a butt massage but I felt weird about asking a dude to rub my ass.

Like all massages, the hour went by way too quickly. Afterward, I decided that my pampering didn’t need to come to an end quite yet and I walked to Yoforia which was a few shops down.

#Yoforia#

Yoforia is good and I like that they use organic yogurt, but the topping selection is much better at Menchie’s. Just saying. Although going light on the toppings is probably a good thing.

#Yoforia#

Even though it was sort of nice out, I got cold eating my yogurt and then I got a little mopey that I didn’t live in this area and that I wasn’t at the Mexican restaurant next door, drinking margaritas with my husband and baby. I realize that makes no sense since I don’t have a baby and really, I don’t like margaritas either. There were just a lot of cute families there.

To distract myself from getting mopey about something completely irrational, I bought bulk quantities of hummus and feta cheese.

#alttext#

I mean, that counts as pampering myself, right? Or maybe it’s just gluttony. Costco has really good hummus though.
