Overzealous with the Produce

Since we started Weight Watchers, both Jason and I have been taking a lot of salads to work. My salads usually include a bunch of veggies, something for protein (usually a can of salmon/tuna or a veggie burger) and then some light dressing. Pretty filling and low in points. It always seems like by the end of the week, we were out of salad supplies though.

So I went to Costco. And I think I might have gotten a little overzealous. There are only two of us who live here.

2.5 lb bag of lettuce:

Romaine lettuce

1 lb tub of spinach:

Baby spinach

5 lbs of baby carrots:

4 lbs broccoli:

I probably should have taken pictures of all of this stuff next to other things for size comparison because you can’t really tell that these bags are Costco sized.  Aside from making a sizable dent in the broccoli (I love just roasting it with some salt and a sprinkle of nutritional yeast), suffice to say, we have a lot of produce to consume in the next couple days. I’ve been adding spinach to my eggs in the morning…

and making meals that use a lot of produce (there’s a bunch of spinach that you can’t really see under the beans in the middle)…

but I kind of think I went overboard. I mean, did I really think I was going to eat 5 lbs of carrots? I guess there’s always carrot juice.

A New Farmers Market

I don’t know if this is just an Atlanta thing, but lots of international grocery stores here are called Farmers Markets. I mean, we have traditional outdoor farmer’s markets (not so much in the winter), but a lot of times, especially when I’m referring to the Farmers Market, they are more like international grocery stores.

When I refer to the Farmers Market, I’m almost always talking about Your Dekalb Farmers Market (I don’t know why it’s called “Your.”) But yesterday we found another. Well, I knew about it because I drive past it every morning on my way to work, but I finally got to explore the Nam Dae Mun Farmers Market.

Nam dae mun

When we first walked in, we noticed two things immediately. One, it was laid out exactly like Publix and two, there was a strong fish smell. We walked to the back and found the source of the smell: fish! Umm, obviously. If the smell wasn’t from fish, that would have been a problem. I wasn’t talking pictures at this point, but they had some live fish swimming around like below the counter, pieces of cut up fish and then some barrels of shrimp and other seafood.

The aisles were full of different shelf-staple foods. Some was similar to what you’d see in a traditional American grocery store and then there was more ethnic stuff. We got some sauces.

I was kind of feeling meh about everything until we go to the produce section and then I had to whip out my phone and start taking pictures. There were all kinds of greens…

squashes….

chilis….

and more interesting things (but no egg fruit, Laura, I looked) ….

Cactus

Spiky fruit

Sugar cane

But the best part was that everything was really cheap. This is a bad picture, but just to illustrate the price…

Cheap avocados

Red peppers were $1 a pound. We got a pound of [out of season] strawberries for a $1. Really, really good prices. The only negative was that they didn’t seem to have any organic produce at all.

I got almost all the produce on my list at Nam Dae Mun, but we had to make a Kroger trip to get some stuff that they didn’t have. Stuff they didn’t have included Tofurkey Sausages so we could make some Superbowl Jambalaya.

This was basicallly this recipe, subbing tofurkey sausages for the real kind, leaving out the shrimp and adding a can of red beans.

Do you do your grocery shopping at more than one store?

Natural Foods Warehouse Trip

Thanks for all the positive comments on my last post.  I honestly feel like I’m jumping on some diet bandwagon with this, but I guess I’ll find out in a few weeks if I feel noticeably different.  Coincidently Sarena suggested that I go to Natural Foods Warehouse to find some gluten-free items at good prices and guess where I was about two hours before her comment?

Apparently, I don’t know not to put my finger over the camera lens.  To my credit, I was very upset at the time because it was the last broadcast of a radio program (radio free lunch) on davefm, my favorite station that is turning into a sports station in a few weeks.  The DJ was crying so then I was crying and now there is going to be no alternative/modern rock stations in our whole city.  Anyway, yes, that’s somehow related to the fact that I put my finger over the camera lens.

I digress.  I always digress.  It’s how I think.  Multi-tasking at it’s finest.

A few weeks ago, I purchased a Groupon to Natural Foods Warehouse.  It’s about a 15-20 minute drive from my office, but it’s a relatively easy drive, so I thought I’d just go during lunch.  It makes more sense to do that since it’s in the total opposite direction from my house.  Like the name suggests, the inside looks rather warehousey.

They don’t have any produce, but they have a lot of packaged stuff (and some freezer and refrigerated too) and it’s all decently priced, at least for natural foods.  I got really excited, however, when I saw one thing…

Kombucha

You can’t really tell from this picture, but that top of Kombucha is in a dark brown bottle and the bottom row is in a clear bottle.  The dark brown bottle is the original formula – the one that they took off the shelves two years ago (I specifically remember that it was two years ago because I really wanted some when I was getting my wedding dress altered and they didn’t have the new formula then.) because of the small alcohol content.  I knew that they had begun to sell the original formula again in the darker bottles but I’d never seen it in person until now.

Kombucha2

No joke, I got carded for buying it.  It was also 50 cents more expensive than the kind in the clear bottle.  Other than bottles of Kombucha, I just kind of bought some random things, but one thing that I did get that’s worth noting is gluten-free bread.  I did a search yesterday for “best gluten-free bread” and the Huffington Post ranked Udi’s as the favorite, so I thought I’d try it while I had this Groupon.

Udis bread

It’s definitely smaller than regular bread, but honestly, it tasted pretty similar to me.  It was a little more dry and crumbly, but I thought it was perfectly fine tasting.  Expensive, but perfectly fine tasting.

I spy a hungry Golden Retriever.  Although he was visibly less excited about gluten-free bread then regular.
