The New Late Night

When I was in college and I guess for a while afterward, a common question between my friends and I was, “What are you doing late night? Let’s meet up late night.” Late night would usually consist of pizza and chicken wings in someone’s dorm room. At least in college, it would.

Things have changed a lot since then and late night doesn’t really exist for me anymore. Once in a blue moon, I’ll stay out until 1 or 2 am, but typically I’m ready for bed at 11pm, even on the weekends.

Eating an early dinner usually goes along with going to bed early. I’m typically very hungry when I get home from work and end up eating dinner by 6:15 or 6:30. Except when I have a yoga class at 7:30, like tonight.

I made what’s become my typical pre-yoga drink – fresh juice. Mr. Breville’s been getting some action lately.

This was one yellow apple, two carrots, half a cucumber, some romaine lettuce leaves and a quarter of a lemon in a Sweetwater glass. ATL represent.

Yoga was hard tonight. The class was pretty crowded which made the room feel hotter. I had to rest in child’s pose during one of the poses towards the end. The class was over at a little bit after nine and Kristy, Laura, Alayna and I stood around chatting for a while. I had to stop at Rite Aid and get Jason some sinus medicine after class and I didn’t get home until 10pm! Did I mention that the yoga studio is a 25 minute drive from my house? Pretty much everything is a 25 minute drive from my house. Well, everything but Applebee’s.

Fortunately, I’d set my rice cooker to cook some Basmati Brown Rice while I was at yoga. I like the Basmati variety but it takes forever to cook so I normally just do the quick cooking rice. But I figured I had the time, so why not. I’m glad that I did because when I got home, I was freakin’ starving.

I basically shoved a cookbook in Jason’s face and asked him to make Cuban Style Black Beans and Rice from the PDQ Vegetarian Cookbook while I showered.

And then I inhaled it. At 10:30. This is the new late night.

Spring Weekend

Remember how my street looked like this a couple weeks ago?

Well, this is what I wore when I went running yesterday.

It was in the high 60′s all weekend! That’s the great thing about Atlanta. While our winters are short, we get enough cold weather that we really appreciate a warm Spring-like day. It’s not like living in a place where it’s hot all the time. I have no doubt that our winter is not over though. It really doesn’t start to warm up for real until the end of March or beginning of April.

This week was a step-back week on my running schedule. I drove down to midtown to meet Joan and we did about 4 miles around the park. There were so many people out. It was crazy. Really made me miss living intown, but I can always drive there (about 20 minutes) so it’s not that big of a deal.

Tonight, I tried another yoga class with Laura. I’ve only been to Atlanta Hot Yoga a handful of times and I’ve always done the Hot class. I wanted to try another style to see how I liked it. So Laura and I braved the West Coast Super Flow class. Yes braved. It was so hard! The website said it was good for beginners but it seemed pretty advanced to me. I think I might stick with the hot class until I get more comfortable. There were some things that I enjoyed more about this class however. Mostly, that there was music. The hot class is silent.

I need to relax. I went straight to Kroger after yoga and didn’t get home until 9:30. Then I tried to finish a home improvement project. I didn’t finish but really need to decompress before I go to bed.

For three weeks now, Laura, Kristy, Alayna and I have been planning to go to hot yoga and for two of the three weeks, it did not work out. First we all got snowed in, then the studio changed their schedule, but last night we were finally able to make it to the 7:30 Hot Class.

I’ve only been to hot yoga a handful of times. But every time I go, I really like it, specifically how I feel afterward. I don’t really know the different styles of yoga yet, but the one we went to is labeled a hot class and is 90 minutes long. Each pose is done twice. I don’t know if it’s Bikram style or not. I stood behind Laura, which was helpful because I could see what she was doing. I’ve made the mistake of standing in the front of a yoga class before which isn’t that great for a newbie since I don’t know the names of the poses. I really would like to explore different styles of yoga to see which I enjoy the most.

The one problem, or more of an annoyance, with the class is that it’s at an awkward time. It’s at 7:30. I get off work at 5:30, so I basically drive home which takes roughly half an hour and hang out at home for 45-50 minutes. I’m used to eating dinner pretty much as soon as I get home, so I didn’t really know what to do. I channeled my inner Kris Carr and Mama Pea and made myself a glass of green juice.

This glass contained a yellow apple, several kale leaves, several romaine lettuce leaves, half a cucumber and some broccoli stems. I felt very yogic (is that a word?) drinking it before yoga class. I really need to make juice more often. It’s just a pain to clean the juicer. Especially when you don’t have a garbage disposal or compost bin. I gave some of the pulp to Murphy. He seemed to like it.

I didn’t get home until after 9:30, which meant a really late dinner. Of course, cooking a real dinner was the last thing on my mind. I just wanted to eat! CPK to the rescue. I don’t eat frozen pizza that often, but sometimes it does hit the spot.

Jason bought me ten classes at this particular studio for my birthday last year and I have been slowly using them up. I have some friends who go to another studio and that studio seems to have more types of classes to choose from. So after I use up my classes, I might try some at that one. I definitely want to continue to practice though. I have notoriously tight hamstrings and I think that it will really help to loosen them up, which in turn will make me a faster runner.
