Unplanned Rest Day

I had it on my schedule that I was going to run five miles at the gym after work. As usual, the end of the workday rolled around and I had little to no motivation to go the gym. Normally, I just force myself to drive there and by the time I start working out, I feel better, but tonight I decided to take a rest day.

I’m not sure when the last day I took off was – sometime last week, I guess. I think it might have been Thursday. Working out six days in a row doesn’t work for me. I get cranky and well, just need my rest. Plus, I had two freelance things to write that are due tomorrow and I knew that if I ran the five miles, I’d get home late, write crappy because I was tired and then have to go to bed and not enjoy my night at all.

Unplanned rest days for the win! I’ll do the five miles tomorrow. I haven’t run since Monday, when I did three miles at lunch, so at least my legs will be well rested.

I kind of milked the “I have wooooooork to do.” thing for all it was worth and Jason made dinner. I wasn’t kidding when I said that I made sandwiches as an alternative to tofu last night. You knew that tofu was going to make an appearance and here it is!

#tofu stir fry#

Jason made a sauce out of soy sauce, oyster sauce, garlic and sesame oil. He didn’t write down the proportions though. In the sauce went a bowl of Trader Joe’s Asian stir fry vegetables and the aforementioned tofu. I made some soba noodles to help absorb the sauce.

I’m hoping that I’ll be feeling the running thing tomorrow. I have to admit: I’m ready for this race, which is March 18th, to be over. I think I might retire from half-marathoning at least for a while. I know I always feel like that and then sign up for another, but I”m really not feeling it anymore. Maybe it’s because I did most of my training alone, but whatever the reason is, I feel like I need a long break.

Food Stuff

Over the weekend, I decided to make a big batch of quinoa that I could take to work for lunches. I always mean to do this, but I never do and end up eating a lot of frozen foods (or leftovers if I’ve been cooking) but this weekend I did.

#Quiona#

This was based on a recipe that I got at Trader Joe’s.

#quinoa salad recipe#

I halved the corn salsa and added some olives, cumin, salt and pepper. I’ve been adding some goat cheese when I take it to work. It’s good, but I think next time, I’d use regular corn instead of the corn salsa. It’s kind of on the sweet side and I’m weird about sweet and savory things, meaning I don’t like them mixed together.

Tonight’s dinner was not sweet and savory but spicy and savory instead, which I definitely prefer. I made another Eating Well recipe – this time the Hot Chile Grilled Cheese sandwich. Jason got excited when I said I was making sandwiches for dinner. I don’t always make tofu! Although that was the alternative if he didn’t want the sandwiches (and it’s tomorrow night’s dinner.)

#hot chile grilled cheese sandwich#

I followed the recipe, save for adding scallions because I didn’t have them. I don’t have a panini press, so I used the George Foreman, which seems to be the same thing. I mean, right? What’s the difference really? This was tasty, but spicy. I thought poblanos were mild. Not these; they definitely had a kick.

Do you prepare extra food on the weekends for lunches? Give me tips. I think the problem is that I’m just lazy on Sundays and while I’ll cook dinner for myself, the thought of cooking lunches too makes me want to take a nap.

Back in the Kitchen

I wasn’t kidding about being tired last night. I was fast asleep by 9:30. It was pretty awesome. My legs were feeling a little sore this morning (a 9:15 pace 10K is pretty fast for me), so I opted to do some triceps and biceps at the gym instead of running or leg strength training. And then I took a nap. You know, the one that I didn’t get to take yesterday.

And then I cooked, finally. I don’t know what happened, but cooking went completely out the window for the past few weeks. But I’m back! Back with sweet potato burgers and brussels sprouts.

This sweet potato burger recipe seems to have taken Pinterest by storm. I have seen it everywhere. I changed the recipe a good bit though. I only used one can of beans, hummus instead of tahini (because I didn’t have any), doubled the flour and didn’t use panko. Oh and I baked them for about 25 minutes at 350 instead of pan frying them. So yeah, I pretty much completely changed the recipe.

Pre-oven:

#Sweet Potato Veggie Burgers#

The burgers were good, but they fell apart pretty easily (as the recipe said they would). Still pretty tasty though. I served them with brussels sprouts. The secret to good brussels, in my opinion, is to get them really seared, almost burnt.

Get them looking like this…

#Brussels Sprouts#

..and then cook them another 5 minutes or even more. But take a better picture of your dinner plate than I did.

So, I did the 11 things blog post a few weeks ago, but Stephanie tagged me in her recent post, so I figured that I’d answer her questions.

1. What is your all time favorite cartoon?
Does a Pixar movie count as a cartoon? UP! If not, Beauty and the Beast.

2.What did you want to be when you grew up?
An animator for Disney. That went well with the first question.

3.What is one house hold item you could not live without?
My computer.

4.What is your least favorite (or most hated) food?
Blue cheese.

5. What is you favorite sports team?
I’m not a big sports person. I’ll route for the Falcons or Redskins for football and the Braves or Orioles for baseball. Or the South Carolina Gamecocks because that’s where Jason went to college. (My school didn’t have a football team.)

6.Are you a Dog or Cat person?
Dog!

7. Do you have a favorite quote?
It’s a song lyric, but I’ve always liked:

“I will go in this way and find my own way out.” – Dave Matthews Band #41

8. What do you never leave home without?
Cell phone

9.Harry Potter or Twilight? (Or neither?)
Neither!

10. Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it?
I hate it when people add an “s” to store names that aren’t plural. The name of the store is not Barnes & Nobles.

11. If you could meet anyone, living or dead, famous or not, who would it be?
I have to get back to you on that one. Not sure.

Charles Harris 10K – A PR!

My friends Erin and Baha, Jamie and Dave, Andrew and Katharine and I have a monthly (or we try to make it monthly) dinner club. Each month a one of the couples picks the restaurant. We ended up taking a long hiatus for various reasons but re-convened last night at Jamie and Dave’s choice – Chateau de Saigon.

I’d actually been wanting to try this place because a former co-worker of mine who is Vietnamese recommended it. It didn’t disappoint. Jason and I split the vegetable soup (we opted for the vegetarian broth) to start out. This was only so-so. It was on the bland side. For my entree, I got the stir-fried tofu with vegetables, while Jason had some sort of combination clay pot platter. The dishes were HUGE. Tons of food. Mine was basically a lot of fried tofu with some bok choy in a sauce. I’m not usually much for fried foods but I love fried tofu, so I was happy. I don’t eat it often, so I figure it’s okay every once in a while.

After dinner, we headed home, since I had an early wake up call for the Charles Harris 10K. I ended up waking up at 5:55, 5 minutes before my alarm was scheduled to go off. I was a little worried about the sudden cold front that’d moved in, but knew that I’d be fine once I started running.

Remember when I said that I was going to make pancakes before the race? Yeah, right. Even when I typed that I knew that the likelihood of me making pancakes at 6 am was slim to none. So I had my usual instead.

#Pre Face Food#

The coffee did it’s job, if you know what I mean, before I left the house, so that was nice. I can’t tell you how many pre-race portapotties I’ve been in. Sorry, TMI?

I left the house at about 6:45 am. The start of the race is only about a mile from my house but it’s a point to point race, so I had to drive to the finish line and take the shuttle to the start. I met up with Kristy, who was also doing the race, right away.

Once we got the school, where the race started, I got my number and met up with Lindsay.

#Charles Harris bib#

I’ve done this race twice in the past, so I’m familiar with the course (plus, it’s by my house). I’ll be the first to tell you, it’s not a pretty course at all. It’s a straight shot down a 4-lane highway basically. But it’s mostly flat, by Atlanta standards at least, and that’s more important to me than nice scenery.

The other nice thing about this race is at every mile marker, there’s a big digital clock displaying the time. I didn’t bring my Garmin, so it was nice to see my pace. I got to the first mile marker at 8:55. Way too fast! The funny thing was, I didn’t feel like I was running especially fast, so I figured I’d just go with it.

I maintained a 9 minute mile pace for the first three miles. Then came the big hill. It was gradual, but there was a definite uphill in the third or fourth mile. On top of slowing down for that, my shoelace became untied. Nevertheless, I was still maintaining a 9-something pace (although closer to ten).

Knowing the course is always really helpful to me and I knew that once we past the Mile 4 marker, it’d be downhill, with a somewhat steep downhill in the 5th mile. I tried to pick up the pace again once I got there.

The last half mile of the race is sort of a tease. You run right by the parking lot where you’ve parked and know the finish line is near, but have to go through a neighborhood for a while to get to it. I felt myself slowing down a bit, but I didn’t feel too bad and when I passed the 6 mile marker, I was happy to see that it read 56 something and I knew that I could achieve and possibly beat my 58 minute goal.

I ended up crossing the finish line with a clock time of 57:30 and later found out my chip time was 57:15! This is a 10K PR by a least a minute for me!

#Charles Harris shirt#

Afterward, I meant to go home and take a nap, but the day got away from me and I went to the movies and dinner with a friend instead. Now I’m absolutely exhausted and I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m in bed by 9pm!

(Kristy and Lindsay kicked ass in this race too.)

Things

1. I google mapped the closest Whole Foods to my office and it told me 9.9 miles. That’s not that bad, right? It took about 15 minutes to get there and it was a super nice one, so yay for that, although boo for my wallet.

2. Remember how I said that this half-marathon training plan was going to be different because I was going to keep up with strength training? Umm, yeah. Out the window it went. I just don’t know how to run 4 days a week and fit it in more than one, maybe twice if I’m lucky. I was doing double time at the gym with strength and cardio when I didn’t have a job, but obviously I don’t have quite the same amount of free time now. Not that I’m complaining.

3. I’m an evening (or sometimes lunch) exerciser. At least during the work week, I am. I cannot get my butt out of bed early to save my life. So that means that when I have a 5-mile run to do, I don’t get home until 7:45ish and the last thing I want to is cook. So, I had the usual: refried beans (they’re hiding under there) with various veggies and salad. I honestly think I could eat this every night.

#Refried Bean Salad#

The salad almost always includes frozen peppers (the pepper and onion blend from Kroger or the Pepper Blend from TJ’s), refried beans, salsa and lettuce but tonight’s also had olives, avocado and goat cheese.

4. My left eye has been twitching for a week or so. It’s so annoying. I don’t feel particularly stressed out, so I don’t think it’s that. I’ve been trying to limit my caffeine to one or two cups of coffee in the morning. It’s not helping. It’s twitching as I type.

5. Jason and I are thinking of going to Vegas this Summer. We were originally going to go to San Francisco, or I wanted to go there, rather, but we’ve just spent a lot of money in the past week fixing our cars, so we decided to go somewhere cheaper instead. Last time we stayed at the MGM Grand.

#MGM Grand#

While I liked the hotel, I sort of want to stay somewhere new. Any suggestions? I don’t want to stay in a dump, but I can’t afford to stay in the Wynn.

A Pancake PR?

I’ve found the secret to my long runs.

#Whole Wheat Pancakes#

For years, I’ve been a pre-run peanut butter on toast or English muffin type of girl, but I think that I’m on to something with these pancakes. They’ve propelled me through both my nine and ten mile long runs (even when I messed up the recipe and doubled the amount of flour). But as much as I’ve enjoyed pancakes before a long run, how well will they do before a race?

I’m about to find out. I registered for the Charles Harris 10K which is this coming Saturday.

#Charles Harris logo#

I’ve done this race for the past two years. It starts about a mile from my house, which is nice and convenient. It’s not the most scenic race course (you basically run down a 4-lane road the entire time) but it’s well organized and it’s a net downhill. I always manage to convince myself that the entire race is downhill, which it isn’t. But a good part of the 5th mile is and that’s a major plus toward the end.

Last year I did this race in 59:32. I think I can beat that this year. I’m hoping for 58 something. Are pancakes the answer? Will pancakes give me a PR? Or perhaps a better question is will I be up for making pancakes at 6:30 am?

What do you eat before races?

2.5 x 4 = 10

I don’t like running near my house. I live basically in between two main streets and while they’re not very hilly, which is nice for Atlanta, they’re not very nice to run on either. I can go about 2.5 miles in either direction before the sidewalks disappear. So, running near my house is not exactly thrilling. That said, I’m usually too lazy to drive somewhere to run and do end up running close to my house. I came up with a 10 mile loop today but I just couldn’t get excited about it.

Last weekend, pancakes proved to be a great pre-race fuel so I decided to have them again. Like last week, I used Janetha’s Whole Wheat Pancake recipe. Only this time the batter seemed really, really thick. And the pancakes were really, really chewy. I couldn’t figure out why until I looked at the recipe again and realized that instead of doubling the flour (I made two batches, one for me and one for Jason), I quadrupled it but doubled the rest of the ingredients. Fail! Don’t do math before having coffee, I guess. They did keep me full though.

So, the 10 mile run: I scrapped my planned loop and decided to do something different. I got to the end of my street and turned right and ran 2.5 miles down the road and 2.5 miles back. I told myself that I was just running five miles and it felt easy. I ran back home and had a little bit of coconut water and a Gu.

#coconut water and gu#

It was nice not to have to hold a water bottle during my run and to have a little break. I played on the computer for a couple of minutes before taking off. This time, I ran 2.5 miles in the other direction and then back. Again, I tried to pretend that I was just running a 5-mile run instead of a ten. It worked until about Mile 8 when my legs started to get tired. Even so, when I made it back home, it felt like I’d been running a shorter distance than if I done a 10 mile loop.

I must have run off my heavy pancakes because for the last mile of the run, all I could think about was what I was going to eat. And what I ate should come as no surprise…

#naan pizza#

I have a pita/tortilla/naan pizza problem. I’m off to foam roll my legs and take Murphy for a walk. He does not seem to care that I just ran ten miles.

The Atlanta Fresh Yogurt Tour

I had a fun break in the middle of the day today. My office took a little field trip to Atlanta Fresh Yogurt. They are in the same office park as we are, and they invited us to come tour their facilities. You don’t have to ask me twice. It’s already my favorite type of yogurt!

#Atlanta Fresh Yogurt#

I bet you didn’t know that they make yogurt in an office park in Norcross, Georgia, did you? I didn’t either until I was having a conversation with a co-worker about Chobani and she mentioned it. Literally two days later, an email went out saying that Atlanta Fresh had invited us for a tour and for some samples.

The facility is small. Much smaller that you might imagine so we had to go in shifts. I went with four co-workers. First they gave us some samples of every flavor. I tried them all except for the new Maple Bacon. That one didn’t go over too well with the people that did try it, however all the other flavors were really good.

#Atlanta Fresh Yogurt#

This yogurt is made from local cows that are not treated with any sort of antibiotics or hormones. They make it three times a week. It’s currently sold in mostly Whole Foods in the Atlanta area, but they said that they are starting to sell it out of state too. Atlanta Fresh is the only yogurt maker in the Southeast. The yogurt comes in non-fat, low-fat and whole milk varieties, however, they are phasing out the whole milk ones, except for the plain. Most of the flavors are available both in non-fat and low-fat and honestly, the two versions tasted the same to me.

Only 6 people produce the yogurt, which I was surprised to learn. Two people make it and four people put the label on it. There is also another person who is in charge of everything and comes up with the flavors. So that’s what I learned about yogurt today. What I also learned is that if you buy the yogurt in the company store, it’s much cheaper. This yogurt is expensive. At Whole Foods, it’s something like $2.50 each (and at Kroger – they sell it in ITP Kroger – it’s more expensive. ITP is an Atlanta term, don’t worry about it if you don’t live here.) and at the store, they’re $2 each. But if you buy a box of 12, you get $4 off. Sold! It’s worth full price though, it’s really good.

#Atlanta Fresh#

Our work fridges were full of these boxes today. I guess we’re a yogurt loving bunch!

Short and Sweet

Even though I said that I chose to eat oily Asian food instead of chocolate, that doesn’t mean that I didn’t have anything sweet on Valentine’s Day. There were a lot of yummy treats when I got into work. Of course, I had to sample them, right?

#Cake Pops#

#Cake Pops#

I actually only sampled the white chocolate one and had a few random Hershey Kisses. I kept inventing excuses to walk past the kitchen (umm, I need to fill up my water, I need some tea, etc) and thought about taking another pop, but I didn’t.

I decided that dinner needed some veggies. I’m still working my way through the 25 Quick Vegetarian Recipes from Eating Well and this was one of the better ones: The Portobello “Philly Cheesesteak” Sandwich.

#Portobello Philly Cheesesteak#

I used mozzarella cheese instead of provolone but other than that, followed the recipe. This was absolutely delicious. Definitely a keeper recipe for sure.

I’m keeping this post short and sweet. I’m tired and after researching trends in social media all day, I’m ready to get off my computer.
