Scoutmob Find

As many Atlantans do, Jason and I try to take advantage of Scoutmob whenever we can, mostly for restaurants.  Not only can we get a discount on our meals, but it also provides us with the opportunity to go to restaurants that we probably wouldn’t ever try.  In a city with tons of dining options, sometimes it’s the hole in the walls that are the best, only you don’t always know about them.

We found ourselves in downtown Norcross last night.

Downtown norcross

Despite the fact that I actually work in Norcross, I’d never been to the downtown area.  It was tiny, but cute with a few restaurants, coffee shops and a bar.  Basically what I think downtown Tucker (where we live) should be like.

We headed into Zapata Tacos and Tequila Bar. I’m very picky when it comes to Mexican food.  I don’t like the typical greasy Mexican places that are heavy on the cheese and light on the veggies.  However, when I looked at Zapata’s menu online, I thought it might be okay.  Chips and salsa were good, and I think I did an okay job of not stuffing my face.

I ordered the Shrimp Molcajete for my meal, minus the queso fresco.

Molcajete

This thing was served in a lava rock and it looked like lava.  Seriously, it took about 10 minutes for it to stop bubbling.  And I still managed to burn my tongue.  It was basically shrimp, onions, tomato and cactus in a tomatillo salsa.  On the side, there were mushrooms, black beans and rice.  Though it looks humungous (or maybe you can’t tell), the actually molcajete isn’t that deep, so it’s not quite the monstrosity that it looks like.

Apparently, I found my food funny.

Jason’s Chicken Tabasquena wasn’t as funny, I guess.  He liked it though.  Though the menu said it was supposed to come with fried plantains.  It came with french fries.  Hmm.

I didn’t have anything to drink, but all the margaritas on the menu were made with agave nectar instead of sour mix, which is always a plus.  I hate sour mix.  All in a all, a decent little restaurant.  I don’t know if I’d seek it out if it wasn’t for Scoutmob, but it was a nice date night.

Let’s Go Brav…Orioles!

On Thursday, Jason sent me an email asking I wanted to go to the Braves game on Friday night.  He was able to get some tickets through his job.  I thought it sounded like a perfect Friday night activity.  I don’t really follow baseball.  And by really I mean that I don’t follow it at all.  I always root for the Braves though, unless they are playing my home team, the Baltimore Orioles.  And what do you know, they were playing the Orioles all weekend!

(Though the area of Maryland that I am from is much closer to DC than Baltimore, I root for the Orioles because the Washington Nationals formed as a team after I moved away from the area.  So I have no allegiance to them.)

We had pretty good seats, right behind home plate!

I actually really felt somewhat conflicted about who to root for, so I basically was happy when either team scored.  I don’t discriminate!

The food options at Turner Field leave something to be desired unless you go into the Chophouse or the 755 Club, so we ended up splitting a soft pretzel and drinking some cheap beer.  Typical baseball fare, I suppose.  We left at the top of the 9th inning so we wouldn’t have to sit in traffic on the way out.  There were fireworks after the game that we could still see as we were walking to our car.

And I don’t know what this is, but I thought it was cool.

Cool

Do you go to baseball games often?  What’s your favorite team?  The Braves won, by the way.

Sun in my Belly Dinner

I’d always heard that this brunch restaurant in Kirkwood, Sun in My Belly, was very good.  I don’t typically go out for brunch that often, so I’d never been, but it had always sort of been on my radar as a place to try one day.  They recently started offering dinner service, so when I found a great deal to try it, I immediately bought it.

The deal was for $50 and you got one bottle of wine, one shared appetizer, two salads, two entrees and one shared dessert.  That’s a lot of food for $50!  We made reservations for 8:30 on Friday night and headed down to Kirkwood, about 15 minutes away, to try it.

(You’ll notice that everyone seems to have a bottle of wine on their table.  I think everyone in the restaurant had the deal too.)  The outside was cute, but it was full so we sat inside where the ambiance was sort of lacking.  It was very much like a bakery with some tables, but I guess that’s what it used to be.  They are also known for their catering, so it makes sense that they put more emphasis on the food than the atmosphere, I guess.

The wines that we were allowed to choose from were all from Crane Creek Vineyards in Young Harris, Georgia.  Did you know Georgia has vineyards?  Well, it does!  We asked to sample both of the whites because we weren’t familiar with the varietals.  We ended up with a Sayval Blanc.  Our waiter described it as sweet, like a Riseling, but I didn’t find it that way.

For our appetizer, we were allowed to choose from the appetizer menu or the light bites menu, so we went with the Hot Pot Coconut Braised Mussels with Green Chile, Garlic and Cilantro.  We are both big fans of mussels and these were some of the best we’d had in a while.  The Green Chile gave each bite an unexpected kick.

For our salad course, I chose the Tuna Nicoise Salad.

While Jason had the Caesar.

Caesar salad

In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have chosen such a hearty salad, because when it came time to eat my entree, Miso Glazed Salmon with warm cilantro, shallot couscous and sesame saute of fresh kale, I was not hungry at all.

Salmon

I ended up getting a good portion of it boxed up to take home.  Jason was smarter by ordering the Caesar salad, which was small, and was fine eating his Pepper Seared Tenderloin of Beef.

Steak fries

I wanted to get dessert to go too, but Jason wanted creme brulee and they couldn’t make that to-go.  So, I made some room for it.  It was small, fortunately.

Creme brulee

I typically have a big appetite but this meal just did me in and I had a stomach ache afterward.  Don’t get me wrong, it was very good, just a lot of food!

Atlantans, the deal is here, if you’re interested in trying it!
